Frank Stranahan's 1950 U.S.G.A. Amateur Golf Championship sterling runner-up medal is up for auction this week.

The 1953 Masters Tournament low amateur trophy awarded to Frank Stranahan is on the auction block this week along with more than 800 other golf memorabilia items.

Bids close Thursday for 400 items, including Stranahan’s 1953 trophy, 1947 Masters runner-up silver medal and 1953 British Open low amateur silver medal. Another 400 items from golfers and tournaments will go to the highest bidders Sunday.

The Golf Auction, an online auction house, is offering the collectibles for sale. The auction includes rare items such as Stranahan’s trophy and runner-up medal, said Kenley Matheny, the president of The Golf Auction.

The site has sold two runner-up medals previously and a few others have appeared on the auction market, Matheny said.

“They just don’t come on the market very often,” he said.

Stranahan’s collection was acquired from the son of the golfer’s former agent, Matheny said. The agent had purchased the items from Stranahan, who played in the Masters 12 times and won two British Amateurs. The heir to the Champion spark plug fortune died last year.

A Tiger Woods-signed flag from his win at the 1994 U.S. amateur, an autographed Bobby Jones photograph, vintage golf balls and golf clubs, and Masters badges are also up for auction.

Stranahan’s 1953 trophy could fetch upwards of $35,000, Matheny said. The winning bid for his runner-up medal could reach $15,000 to $20,000.

“High-end golf memorabilia has had a recent boom,” Matheny said. “Everything just really seems to be appreciating in value.”
