Lyle makes cut 25 years after 1988 Masters win

Sandy Lyle will be playing through the weekend on his silver jubilee.

Lyle, the 1988 Masters Tournament champion, easily made the cut by shooting even-par 72 on Friday to stay 1-over for the tournament.

Lyle won his green jacket with a famous fairway bunker shot at No. 18 that made him the first British golfer to win the Masters.

Fast-forward to 2013, and he has made the cut for the first time since 2009.

“It was good theater at the time, but hard work for me,” Lyle said about his 1988 win. “I’ve enjoyed it, this week, obviously 25 years, teeing off first at the Masters as well. To do that and make the cut as well, it’s been a good week so far.”

The 55-year-old Scot made the cut despite an inauspicious start – he was 2-over after four holes on Thursday.

“Any time you make the cut at Augusta you’re really happy,” Lyle said. “That’s what I’m heartily delighted about – that’s what I came out to do.”
