Matt Kuchar loses momentum with double bogey early

Matt Kuchar found himself playing for his first green jacket early in the fourth round, but a double bogey changed his fortunes quickly.

Kuchar carded 5 on the par-3 fourth hole by four-putting, and Jordan Spieth holed from the bunker on the same hole, resulting in a three-shot swing in a matter of minutes.

After opening Sunday one stroke off the lead, Kuchar shot 2-over 74 and finished tied for fifth at 2-under in the 2014 Masters Tournament.

“I was still OK with it,” he said. “I knew in golf you have ups and downs. Those things happen.”

Kuchar has finished in the top 10 each of the past three years. The 35-year-old, playing in his eighth Masters, said he understands chances at a green jacket won’t always be there.

“It’s an exciting place to be, but it’s a tough one,” he said. “I don’t know how many opportunities you get at winning the Masters tournament, and I’ve had two so far. I don’t know how many more I’ll get.

“It’s one of those things, you get in the situation and you hope to take advantage. But it’s a lot better in this position than playing early on Sunday, that’s for sure.”
