Francesco Molinari, who shot 70 Saturday, follows his putt on No. 9. He bogeyed the hole but then had consecutive birdies at 12, 13 and 14 before closing with bogeys at 17 and 18.

Francesco Molinari was not the only golfer to see his name climb and then fall off the leaderboard.

The Italian tried to focus on the positives of Saturday’s 2-under round, which would have been even better had he avoided bogeys on the last two holes.

“I’m happy with the round,” Molinari said. “Obviously, 17 and 18 are two tough holes ... Hopefully, I won’t make two bogeys in the end tomorrow.”

Molinari was even-par as “moving day” began and reached 1-under as he made the turn.

He then made a surge, posting three consecutive birdies at Nos. 12-14, with an iron shot on the par-3 12th leaving him a foot from the hole.

With the course getting firmer, Molinari ran into some late trouble. On 17, a poor second shot led to a 5. On the last hole, a missed putt set him back another shot as the leaderboard was about to get even more hectic.

Molinari knows the disappointing end to the solid round leaves him looking up.

“It’s going to be obviously really hard,” Molinari said. “There’s lots of players still with a chance, (but) I’m happy with the position I’m in. Probably the most realistic goal for (Sunday) is to finish in the top 10.”
