Sandy Lyle uses hickory clubs during practice round

Past Masters Tournament champion Sandy Lyle isn’t ready to give up the new technology in golf, but he went back in time Saturday to have some fun.

Lyle used hickory clubs to play Augusta National Golf Club during a practice round before Masters Week.

“I had driven up five hours, and I wasn’t quite on full swing,” Lyle said. “I didn’t break 80. My challenge was to break 80, and it was off the backish tees, not the front. But I parred the first and 18th.”

Lyle said he won’t go full hickory during the Masters, but he will use a hickory putter Thursday.

The 1988 champion’s hickory use caught the attention of Tiger Woods, who brought it up during the Champions Dinner on Tuesday night.

“He asked where I got them. He sounded quite interested,” Lyle said.

Lyle, 57, has made the cut the past two years, including tying for 44th in 2014. Despite playing in 33 Masters, he said the nerves never leave.

“It still gets the old ticker going, no matter what happens,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
