Sometimes called the best player yet to win a major, Lee Westwood goes into today’s final round tied with three players just five strokes behind leader Peter Hanson.
Saturday’s even-par 72 was anything but even, however. He carded four bogeys and four birdies and was in trouble most of the day.
The Englishman drove left on No. 2, but a low-hooking iron set him up for a two-putt birdie from 12 feet. He drove into fairway bunkers on Nos. 5 and 8, clipped a tree down the left side with his tee shot on 7, and three-putted 9 with a short lip-out.
Westwood scored a sand save on 10 and birdied 11 but left his bunker shot on 12 in the sand before settling for bogey. He made another bogey on 13 after almost hitting into the tributary of Rae’s Creek fronting the green.
But battling paid off. He birdied No. 14 from 12 feet, birdied 15 after going over the green in two, then parred out.
“Yeah, I made a couple of bad bogeys. All in all, it was a good scramble to get around in 72,” he said. “I’m only five back. It’s not as close as I’d like to be, but I have a chance, if I can get a score going, make a few birdies and then go a few under on the back nine.”
