1963: Former President Eisenhower arrives at Daniel Field for his 40th visit to Augusta, and his sixth since leaving the White House. Clifford Roberts, chairman of the Augusta National, was among the welcoming committee.
The former chief executive is joining fellow members of the Augusta National Golf Club for a weeklong party, which officially opened the private club’s golf season.
1956: Days before the presidential election, Chronicle-Herald columnist Randy Russell calls 10 residents living on Eisenhower Drive across from the Augusta National Golf Club to ask who they’ll vote for. Four will answer, and all say they favor Democrat Adlai Stevenson. Despite the lack of support on the street named in his honor, the president will win re-election two days later.
1948: Stewart Maiden, the Scottish-born Atlanta golf pro who taught a young Bobby Jones how to swing, dies in an Atlanta hospital.
Nicknamed "Kiltie," Maiden spent thousands of hours showing the young Jones the way to swing and putt while he was club professional at East Lake Country Club where Jones first began to play.
"Little Bobby imitated Maiden’s swing to perfection because he spent his afternoons after school with a bucket of balls and an ageless bag of clubs," The Chronicle would report. “Their friendship developed as Maiden realized that Jones would grow to be great.”
Maiden would leave Atlanta for jobs in St. Louis and New York, then returned to Atlanta in 1947 Jones’ urging.
