Inside the numbers: Putting looms large
On a day when conditions and pin placements made low scoring difficult, putting tends to show more than ever.
Jason Day, the two-day Masters Tournament leader at 6-under, tied with Rory McIlroy for fewest putts in the second round with 25. The Australian ranks second in putting for the tournament, averaging 1.42 putts per hole.
Rickie Fowler, who was on the leaderboard for much of Friday until a triple bogey on 16, ranks first in putting with an average of 1.36 per hole.
Fred Couples, who has been on top and around the leaderboard for two days, is tied for fourth with 53 putts over 36 holes, an average of 1.47 per hole.
The same factors listed above also showed in the overall scoring when compared between the two days. A total of 12 golfers broke 70 on Thursday. That number fell to only five on Friday (Day: 68, Angel Cabrera, Nick Watney, Jason Dufner, Scott Piercy: 69).
Through two rounds, Robert Garrigus leads the field with three eagles, two coming on No. 15. Ernie Els and Matteo Manassero each have two eagles.
Day has the most birdies with 12. Couples, Dufner and Brandt Snedeker each have 11.
On a different note, Snedeker is tied for most birdies on par 5s with six despite ranking 92nd of 93 in driving distance for the week. It may come as no surprise that Snedeker is in the top 20 in greens in regulation.
