Garcia shoots bogey-free 71 at Masters
Go figure.
Thursday’s first round of the Masters Tournament was deemed by many to have been played in some of the toughest conditions ever at Augusta National. Yet the argument could be made that Sergio Garcia enjoyed his best round ever on the course.
He didn’t reach the 60s as he’s done nine times in 62 previous rounds, but Garcia’s 1-under 71 was just as good if not better. On a day where the field combined to make 407 bogeys and 44 doubles or worse, Garcia contributed nothing to that total, recording a bogey-free round to finish the day tied for fourth.
Garcia’s lone birdie came on No. 8.
“Obviously under the conditions we played on and to be able to go bogey-free — I don’t know if it’s probably my first bogey-free round here at Augusta,” Garcia said. “So it was good to do that. … I played fairly well, stayed quite patient and I got a couple decent breaks on a couple holes that helped me salvage par and kept my round going. But it wasn’t easy out there, I’ll tell you that.”
