Anirban Lahiri has India's backing in Augusta
Anirban Lahiri has already received an outpouring of support as he represents India at the Masters Tournament this week.
Lahiri, playing in his first Masters, is the third Indian to compete at Augusta National Golf Club. As the country’s lone representative this year, he has the backing of a nation’s golf fans.
He said while the excitement in India this week is “massive,” he also heard it while walking the course during Monday’s practice round.
“I can even feel that out here, a lot of them coming up saying, ‘We are rooting for you and have fun. Represent your country and be proud,’” Lahiri said. “It’s fantastic. It gives me so much energy. I definitely want to do well for myself, but I want to do well more for everyone else and for golf, what it might do back home. So, I have a lot to play for.”
Lahiri has 15 international wins, including four in the past year. He’s the No. 1-ranked player on the Asian Tour and has two wins this year on the European Tour.
The 27-year-old played in the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship in March and has made five cuts in eight career PGA Tour events.
Lahiri said he played the course for the first time Sunday, which was also the first time he had seen it in person.
“The first thing that hit me is how different it is to actually play, how different it is to actually be hitting those shots rather than watching those shots,” he said. “It’s quite different, obviously. It’s quite amazing and it’s a great feeling.”
