Aussies pull for countrymen to break Masters drought

Australian golf fans showed enthusiastic support for three countrymen playing in two of the final three pairings of the 2013 Masters Tournament.

Jason Day began his final round at 2:20 p.m., followed by the pairing of Adam Scott and Marc Leishman.

“It’s going to be a big day. We hope one wins we don’t really care which one,” patron Brad Harrison said. “It could be the greatest day in history for Australian sports.”

Harrison, Dave Singer and Marty Nicholas, all of Sydney, wore blazers and pants resembling the Australian flag. The three sported the same outfits at the 2011 tournament, when Day and Scott tied for second place.

“We feel like there’s some unfinished business,” Harrison said.

Claude Antonucci, also of Sydney, was one of six Australian fans wearing green and gold hats with a kangaroo emblem. He left his 3-week-old daughter to see Australians play in the Masters.

“We always band together,” Antonucci said. “We travel a long way to support our guys.”

Australian fans leaned toward Scott to win but said they’d like to see their countrymen take the top three places.

“We think we can do it this time,” said David Elia, of Melbourne. “We’d love to see Scotty win it.”
