Dustin Johnson feeling better after golf absence
Dustin Johnson feels different – and that’s the best part.
Since taking a six-month leave of absence for “personal challenges,” Johnson has been performing well on the course. Off the course, fiancée Paulina Gretzky gave birth to their son, Tatum. He said both will be in Augusta.
“I definitely feel different,” Johnson said. “I’m a father now, so that’s been the best thing that’s happened this year. You know, couldn’t be in a better place right now in my life. I feel like my golf game’s really good. My personal life’s doing great.”
Johnson has remained almost mum about why he was away from the game. Golf.com reported that he was suspended by the PGA Tour for a failed third drug test. The tour responded with a statement saying that Johnson had not been suspended but took a voluntary leave of absence. ESPN.com later had a story where Johnson said his problems came from drinking too much.
Regardless, this year has seen the 30-year-old South Carolinian post four top-six finishes. The highlight was his win at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, Fla.
Johnson has been close in his quest to win his first major. He’s finished in the top five in three of the four majors. The exception is the Masters, where his best finish is a tie for 13th in 2013.
Johnson said he believes he’s getting close to breaking through and is thinking even more positively about his career.
“I think I’ve done OK. I think it’s good,” Johnson said. “It’s not – you know, it hasn’t been great yet. But I mean, for right now, I think I’ve had a good career. But eventually I want to say I’ve had a great career.”
