Fan notes: From Paris to Augusta

PLEASURE, NOT BUSINESS: Attending the Masters Tour­nament meant cutting short a business trip to Paris for Joe Cashia and Angela Humph­reys, of Nashville, Tenn.

“By all means, we’re not going to miss this,” Cashia said.

The couple flew into Atlanta on Friday and felt jet-lagged until walking onto the course. The bright sunshine helped to energize them, they said.

“I hope Tiger Woods wins because I was here when he won his first Masters (in 1997),” Humphreys said.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT: Sam Snead won the Masters Tourna­ment in 1952, the first time Don and Ace Millsaps, of Charlotte, N.C., attended the golf event. Ace remembers the year because she was pregnant with their daughter, Sydney.

“We still think the greatest thing on the course is the tree behind the (leaderboard) on No. 18,” Don said. “The shape and age of it are remarkable.”

The couple recently gave their collection of tournament badges to their grandson to sell on the Internet.

FATHER AND SON: Tiger Woods and amateur Tianlang Guan topped the list of golfers to watch Saturday for John Lee and his 19-year-old son, Win Lee, both of Statesboro, Ga.

“The 14-year-old blows my mind,” Win said of Guan. John was back at the Masters for the first time in 20 years. Saturday was his son’s first visit.

“We’ve got a great day ahead and hope everybody does well,” John said.

SUN AND FUN: Beth Thompson watched a turtle sun itself on the edge of the 16th green as her son, Michael Thompson, lined up a putt.

“Doesn’t get any better than that,” she said. “He (the turtle) just stays there. It’s like he’s watching the golf.”

She said she also saw the turtles earlier in the week.

“He’s got a pretty good view there,” said Michael’s brother-in-law, Daryl Hodgkin­son. “He’s got the best view in the house.”

ENGLAND’S HOPES: Alex and James Mee, of Sheffield, Eng­land, were rooting for countryman Lee West­wood to win.

Westwood started the day three shots off the lead, but scores change quickly on Saturday at the Masters, the father and son said. (Westwood ended the day tied for ninth.) Additionally, they were watching for Luke Donald, also from England.

“We’ve never been to a big golf tournament before, so we’re looking forward to seeing some golf,” Alex said.
