Hideki Matsuyama returns as pro player
Hideki Matsuyama is back in Augusta for his third Masters Tournament appearance in four years, but this trip comes with a different title.
After competing as an amateur the first two times – including being low amateur in 2011 – the 22-year-old is gunning for a green jacket for the first time as a professional.
“I’m trying to overcome my nervousness being a professional,” he said. “I’m doing my best.”
The Japanese golfer is in strong form this season. In seven tournaments, he’s finished in the top 25 six times and is ranked 43rd in the FedEx Cup standings.
As talk about a rookie or young player winning the Masters gains steam, Matsuyama believes he deserves to be part of that conversation.
“I feel like I’m one of those who has a chance,” he said. “All I can do is prepare the best I can over the next couple of days and see how it goes.”
