Jordan Spieth sets 36-hole Masters scoring record
Jordan Spieth set the 36-hole Masters Tournament scoring record today.
After posting an opening 8-under-64 on Thursday, Spieth followed with 66 for a 14-under-par 130 total at Augusta National Golf Club. The mark breaks the 39-year-old record set by Raymond Floyd in 1976 (13-under 131).
Spieth played bogey-free golf in the second round, recording six birdies. He had an opportunity to set the 36-hole major championship record, but his 7-foot, downhill birdie attempt at No. 18 slid just by the hole.
Through 36 holes, Spieth has made 15 birdies and just one bogey. Also, he leads the field with 50 putts (1.39 average).
“Any time you can set a record here is pretty awesome,” Spieth said. “I struck it, I thought, better than yesterday. Didn’t rely on the breaks as much.
“To have one bogey through 36 holes on this track means that I’m putting well and putting from short distances well. I’ve just got to keep my head down and find greens in regulation so that I can continue to have looks.”
Spieth takes a five-shot lead into this weekend. Charley Hoffman backed up an opening 67 with 68 and is alone in second at 9-under 135. Justin Rose (70), Dustin Johnson (67) and Paul Casey (68) are tied for third at 137. Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson shot 68 and is in sixth at 138, while Ernie Els shot 72 and is in seventh at 139.
Kevin Na (66), Par-3 Contest winner Kevin Streelman (70), Bill Haas (71) and Ryan Moore (66) are tied for eighth place at 140.
Mark O’Meara, the 1998 Masters champion, shot 68 and is tied at 141 with past green jacket winners Adam Scott (69), Angel Cabrera (69), Charl Schwartzel (70) and three others.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy flirted with the cut line before shooting 31 on the back nine for 71. He sits at 142, tied with Tiger Woods, who shot 69.
The top 55 players with totals of 146 or better advanced to the weekend.
All seven amateurs in the field missed the cut – the first time that’s happened since 2009.
It was an emotional day for two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, who received standing ovations throughout his final competitive round at Augusta National. The 63-year-old finished with 85, but the score didn’t matter to anyone. Longtime caddie Carl Jackson, who couldn’t carry the bag this week because of health issues, gave Crenshaw an embrace on the 18th green.
