Fan notes: Course's grounds draw raves
The manicured grass of Augusta National Golf Club’s fairways and greens made a stunning first impression for J.L. Fisk, of Memphis, Tenn.
“There’s not a weed, not a spot. It looks like a carpet and feels like a carpet,” Fisk said.
Seeing the rolling hills in person was enough to leave him breathless.
“It’s everything I thought it would be and then some,” Fisk said. “No wonder Bobby Jones said this is where I want to build a golf course.”
PHONE HOME: What do you say when you call your wife from the Masters Tournament?
Vic Wallace, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was careful not to rub it in as he held a pimento cheese sandwich and a cold beer. He called home using a free courtesy phone on the grounds.
“I told her I miss her and I love her,” Wallace said.
Gene Booth, also of Ponte Vedra Beach, used the free phones to call his wife Tuesday morning. Later, he planned to call his son and daughter “to let them know I’m alive and well,” he said.
GEORGIA PRIDE: Sporting a red Titleist baseball cap with a University of Georgia logo, Jeff Speight, of Milledgeville, Ga., was ready to cheer for defending champion Bubba Watson.
“I’m definitely a Bubba fan,” he said. “I always grew up watching Georgia play anything, including golf.”
Speight spotted a few other patrons sporting Georgia gear, along with fans from Southeastern Conference rivals in their school apparel, he said.
“I hope (Bubba) gives them a run for their money this year as he did last year,” Speight said.
