Masters gets started
The 78th Masters Tournament has officially begun.
Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player each hit their ceremonial tee shots, and Stewart Cink and Tim Clark followed them as the first competitors to tee off this morning at Augusta National Golf Club.
Palmer hit his drive to the bottom of the hill at No. 1 and drew a big round of applause.
Player went next and flew his ball halfway up the slope of the opening fairway.
Finally, Nicklaus hit. The six-time Masters champion flew his ball almost to where Player's stopped, and then it rolled barely past.
That drew a big cheer from the Nicklaus camp.
"He used to outdrive me by 50 yards, so I'm getting closer," Player quipped.
A field of 97 competitors will play the first round today under what is expected to be near-ideal conditions.
