McIlroy avoids another disaster at No. 10

When Rory McIlroy reached the 10th tee, he knew what he wasn’t going to do.

After hitting an errant shot left that landed between the cabins and ultimately led to triple bogey in last year’s final round, McIlroy avoided disaster this time around. He blew his drive into the trees right and later got up and down for par in Thursday’s first round.

“Well, I was definitely erring more on the right-hand side,” he said. “But it was fine.”

McIlroy began the day with a double bogey on the first hole. He rebounded with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 for a momentum-building, 1-under 71 to put him four shots off the lead.

“It’ll make dinner taste a lot better tonight,” the 22-year-old Northern Irishman said. “I wanted to at least finish even par, and birdieing the last was really nice. Yeah, definitely happy coming off the course in red numbers.”
