Oosthuizen's historic double-eagle at 2 vaults him into the lead
Louis Oosthuizen grabbed control of the Masters Tournament leaderboard early in his round this afternoon with the firest albatross ever at the par-5 No. 2.
The double eagle launched Oosthuizen from 7-under to 10-under for the tournament and gave him a two-stroke lead at the time over Peter Hanson and Phil Mickelson.
A bogey on No. 4 dropped him to 9-under for a one shot lead over Mickelson, who is at 8-under. Hanson, who had the lead entering today’s play at 9-under is starting to fade, having bogeyed two of his first three holes.
There have only been three other double-eagles in tournament history, the latest in 1994 by Jeff Maggert on the par-5 13.
The most famous albatross was Gene Sarazen’s on the par-5 15 in 1935 that propelled him to victory.
