Trevor Immelman offers support to charity
Despite having a brother in the state and spot in the Champions Locker Room at Augusta National Golf Club, Trevor Immelman said he doesn’t make many trips to Georgia.
His previous two stops in the state came in the fall, including when he visited Columbus - where his brother Mark coaches the Columbus State men’s golf team - on Sept. 12 to make an appearance at an event for Golf 9/12, a charity founded in part by his father.
Golfers teed off at the same time at courses around the country in events that raised money for their local law enforcement, fire and emergency response departments after the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Immelman said he has plans to stay involved this year and hopes to see the nonprofit organization continue to raise interest.
“This year, the focus is going to be more to the first responders from a charity standpoint, so we’re excited about that,” said Immelman, who shot 4-over 76 on Saturday. “We’ll be getting a lot of local police and firemen involved in that.”
Immelman, the 2008 Masters champion, bogeyed seven holes Saturday, including three of the final four, for a three-day 9-over 225. But the round felt better than the final score looked, he said, and he hopes to emulate some aspects of Saturday’s performance.
“I didn’t play that bad,” Immelman said. “I’ve got to play similar, get a few good breaks and make a few putts and I should be good.”
Angel Cabrera, Immelman’s partner on Saturday, bogeyed the first hole but birdied two along the way to finish at 1-under 71 for the day and a total of 4-over 220.
