Masters eagle record blown away early Sunday
Masters Tournament officials will stay busy after Sunday’s final round by shipping out a record amount of crystal.
The 2015 Masters field set a tournament record for eagles by surpassing the previous high of 37 set in 1991. This year’s total was 30 entering the fourth round, and the record was passed early.
Defending champion Bubba Watson carded two eagles in the fourth round on Nos. 2 and 13. Dustin Johnson has the most this week by recording three, all in the second round, which set a Masters single-round record.
Among fourth-round contenders who have eagles this week, Charley Hoffman hit one on No. 15 on Thursday to propel him to an opening-round 67. Phil Mickelson did it on No. 8 on Thursday.
Three have come in exciting fashion. Sangmoon Bae holed out from 165 yards on par-4 No. 14 for eagle Sunday, Morgan Hoffmann did the same from 123 yards on No. 3 on Saturday, and Thongchai Jaidee did it from 98 yards on No. 3 on Friday.
Sunday’s eagle total is already in double digits and continues to climb. Friday’s round had the most so far, with 17.
Each player to record an eagle is awarded a pair of crystal glasses.
