Par-3s on front nine offer test
None of the par-3 holes at Augusta National are pushovers, and the two on the front, Nos. 4 and 6, are a difficult test very close together.
No one would have known that by watching the final twosome of Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth in Sunday’s final round of the Masters.
Both birdied the holes, a feat no other player accomplished in one round, much less both players in a twosome.
The only other player who could claim a birdie at each hole was Sandy Lyle, who birdied No. 4 in the first round and No. 6 in the third.
Spieth turned in one of the most spectacular shots of the day when he holed out a bunker shot at the fourth for birdie. Watson made a 6-foot putt for birdie on top of that.
At No. 6, Watson made a 10-foot birdie putt and Spieth tapped in from 3 feet.
Watson and Spieth accounted for half of the birdies made at No. 4 in the final round. The hole was the most difficult on the course, playing to an average of 3.471, and was second in difficulty for the tournament at 3.409.
The sixth hole averaged 3.157 in the final round (ninth in difficulty) and 3.149 for the tournament (10th).
