Patrons turn to guide, maps to get grip on grounds

Trying to get their bearings at Augusta National Golf Club, some Masters patrons could be seen early Tuesday checking out the tournament’s Spectator Guide.

Kim Forseth and her husband, Brian, opened the book to a two-page course map. They pointed at the illustration noting the holes they wanted to visit during the day.

“We want to see the course as much as the players,” Brian Forseth said.

Many patrons who arrived early for Tuesday’s practice round were scanning the guide and the course map printed on the sheets that list players.

The expansive grounds were overwhelming for first-time patron Mark Rogers, Brian Forseth’s father.

Before arriving at the course, the Forseths, who came from the San Francisco Bay area, made a plan to see Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker. Mapping out their day helped ensure they could watch the players practice and spot the Hogan Bridge and blooming azaleas at Amen Corner.

Jeremy Beyersdorf, of Wisconsin, also studied the map to avoid missing any special spots on the course. One day wouldn’t be enough time to get a good feel for the course on his first visit, he said.

“We won’t know the course by the time we leave,” he said.
