Sergio Garcia finishes strong to make cut
After a bogey Friday on the par-5 13th, the wheels started churning in Sergio Garcia’s mind.
“I wasn’t sure I would make the cut,” he said. “After bogeying 13, I thought to myself, ‘I’ve seen this movie a lot of times here.’ ”
Fortunately for Garcia, Friday’s movie didn’t end tragically.
After playing the first 13 holes in 5-over, the Spaniard birdied four of his final five to post 74 and enter the weekend at 2-under.
“I needed every one,” Garcia said of the birdies. “To make birdie on 17 was big, just to get a little more breathing room. And then I hit a really good second shot on 18, came down the hill and gave me an easy putt from there.”
Garcia said Friday was the first time he’s ever birdied four of the final five holes at Augusta National Golf Club.
“In 2004, I had a good finish – eagle, birdie, par, par,” Garcia said. “But never had four birdies in the final five holes.”
Garcia enters the weekend 12 shots back of leader Jordan Spieth.
