Teen has to pass up Kevin Streelman's offer on practice round
For a couple of hours Wednesday, South Effingham High senior Harrison Stafford thought he was going to his first Masters.
He didn’t start the morning thinking that when he arrived at school in Guyton, Ga. Then PGA Tour player Kevin Streelman put the word out on Twitter that he had two passes available to Wednesday’s practice round because his parents were ill. Streelman sought a junior golfer and a parent who had never been to Augusta National, and Stafford, 17, replied.
Streelman sent him a direct message, and a minute later, he was talking to Stafford by phone.
“It shows what a class act he is,” Stafford said. “That’s awesome.”
Stafford thought he could make the 2½-hour drive to Augusta by noon, but his mother decided the notice was too short, and her son stayed in school.
“It’s disappointing,” Stafford said. “I’d take that to go to the Masters.”
Stafford, who plays for the school golf team and has a scholarship to the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, is now rooting for Streelman to win the Masters.
“That’d be awesome,” Stafford said.
