Youngest player aims to make weekend
Matthew Fitzpatrick had to laugh off the notion that he could be in contention in his first Masters Tournament.
The 19-year-old got here by winning the 2013 U.S. Amateur, becoming the first English player to win the honor since 1911. He was also the low amateur at the 2013 British Open.
“My aim is to make the cut,” Fitzpatrick said. “That’s the aim at the start of the year for me is to make the cut in the majors. Now I don’t want to get too carried away with everything and just play one shot at a time and play sort of aggressive to conservative targets, really, and yeah, like I say, just make the cut and push on from there really.”
Fitzpatrick, the youngest player in the field, hasn’t set a date on turning pro. He said he wants to see how this year goes and how he competes against the sort of competition he will face this week.
“I’ve not really got any plans to turn pro soon,” he said. “Could be after this week, could be two weeks, could be three, could be after the Open. So I’ve not got a specific plan. It could just come randomly, and it might not be till next year. So I’m mainly seeing how I play this year and how I perform against these guys in particular.”
