25th anniversary of Masters win not kind to Mize

There was no Mize magic on his anniversary.

Twenty-five years after he famously won the 1987 Masters Tournament in a playoff – with his birdie chip shot at No. 11 snatching the green jacket from Greg Norman’s grasp – Larry Mize missed the cut Friday.

Mize finished 7-over for the two rounds despite playing even on the front nine both days. His struggles came after he made the turn, as he birdied only once after that. He even carded a seven and a six at the par-5 13.

The par-5s were problematic in general for Mize, making only one birdie on the four holes in two rounds.

“I wasn’t as comfortable with my game at times as I’d like to be on the course, but I always love playing this golf course and coming here,” he said. “There’s no doubt.”

Though disappointed with his finish, Mize said he plans on staying in town to watch the weekend rounds.

He said he didn’t notice any difference when it came to fan attention this year as opposed to others, but he added it’s always good to play at Augusta.

In fact, what struck Mize the most was how quickly time has passed since his Masters triumph.

“It’s amazing,” Mize said. “The older you get, the faster it goes, too.”
